Environmental Policy Statement

1.      Professional Engineering Publishing (PEP) recognises that its activities affect the environment, and accepts its responsibility to manage its business activities accordingly.

2.      PEP is committed to making continuous improvements to reduce its impact on the environment.

3.      This impact arises from two main areas: the publishing activity itself (mainly print production and distribution) and from business operations.

3.1    Within the publishing activity, both learned and commercial, PEP relies upon its external suppliers to produce print-based and electronic products, and associated marketing and distribution materials. The main environmental impacts arise from:-

Materials sourcing (paper, board, packaging material)

Consumption of energy and water in printing, binding, and distribution

Emissions and wastes from chemicals used in print production

      Waste materials

3.2    The main impacts of the business operations arise from:-

Use of energy and water in the office building

Emissions associated with staff business travel and staff travel to/from work

Consumption (and waste) of resources used in the offices, particularly paper, toner cartridges, electrical equipment.

4.         PEP will:

4.1    Comply with the requirements of environmental legislation and approved codes of practice.

4.2    Regularly review the environmental impact of all current and likely future operations

4.3    Reduce, reuse, and recycle wastes

4.4    Reduce the use of all energy and natural resources where reasonably practicable

4.5    Conserve energy and strive to reduce the use of energy

4.6    Raise awareness of environmental issues

4.7    Require similar standards from its suppliers and contractors

4.8    Require its production suppliers to use paper sourced from sustainable forestry (PEFC or FSC certified)

4.9    From the beginning of 2009, expect its print suppliers to have adopted the IS014001 environmental management standard (or similar), or to achieve such certification within two years.
