Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science

The Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science advances the understanding of both the fundamentals of engineering science and its application to the solution of challenges and problems in engineering. Published twelve times a year. ISSN:0954-4062 (Print); 2041-2983(Online)

Message from the Editor

Dear Colleague,

The Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science is dedicated to the publication of high quality papers on all aspects of mechanical engineering science.

It represents one of the oldest parts of the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the first issue being published under the guidance of a distinguished Editorial Board in June 1959. Special Issues appear at the beginning and the end of 2009 to celebrate this significant half century.

The Journal is published monthly, with papers being peer reviewed to high international standards. All papers are processed expeditiously, with accepted contributions generally appearing in the Journal within twelve months of submission.

The international Editorial Board ensures that significant developments in mechanical engineering science from around the world are reflected in the Journal.

High quality accepted papers from around the world appear in each issue in one of the following sections of the Journal: Review papers; Materials, stress analysis structures; Dynamics and control; Fluid mechanics; Thermodynamics and heat transfer; Design and manufacture; Surfaces and interfaces; Bio-medical engineering; Mechanisms and machines; Mechatronics and information technology; Micro- and nano-mechanical systems.

An additional Fast-Track Communications section permits consideration to be given to the rapid publication of short, high-quality, peer-reviewed accounts of exciting and important developments.

The Editor would be pleased to discuss proposals for the publication of original work in the Journal: matthewc@mech.gla.ac.uk

Professor Matthew Cartmell - University of Glasgow, UK
Editor, Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science

Biographical Information

Professor Cartmell is based at the University of Glasgow, where he is the James Watt Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

Matthew is particularly interested in problems of applied dynamics relating to the modelling and analysis of nonlinear phenomena. His Ph.D. research at the University of Edinburgh was completed in 1984; since then he has held a considerable number of grants as Principal Investigator.

Matthew Cartmell has authored and co-authored around 150 research papers, one research text on parametric and nonlinear vibration, contributed book chapters on disk brake dynamics and space tethers (co-authored with H. Ouyang and C. R. McInnes, respectively), and he edited the proceedings for the 5th International Conference on Modern Practice in Stress and Vibration Analysis held in Glasgow in 2003.

Matthew is a chartered engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and a senior member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Matthew is a college member for the EPSRC's General Engineering programme. He represented the Institution of Mechanical Engineers on the Institute of Physics' Stress and Vibration Group committee for several years. He was also a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' Process Industries Division Design Committee, and has sat on several international academic review committees in recent years.

In January 2009 Matthew was appointed Editor of the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science.
