Message from the Editor

Dear Colleague,

The Journal of Materials: Design and Applications is Part L of the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. It is dedicated to publishing papers of the highest quality, in a timely fashion, covering a variety of important areas in materials technology.

The Journal’s publishers have a wealth of publishing expertise and ensure that authors are given exemplary service. Papers can be submitted online to enter the peer review process quickly. Every attention is given to publishing the papers as quickly as possible.

The Journal has an excellent international reputation, with a corresponding
international Editorial Board from a large number of different materials areas and disciplines advising the Editor.

Papers are welcomed from researchers and authors wishing to publish within the area of materials relating particularly to design and their applications. The materials covered include metals, ceramics, and composites, as well as engineering polymers. In other words, the whole spectrum of materials activity is catered for.

We look forward to receiving your submissions.

Professor W M Banks – University of Strathclyde
Editor, Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part L: Journal of Materials: Design and Applications

Biographical Information

Professor Banks is currently Professor of Advanced Materials in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde.

His current research studies include those related to adhesive bonding, and the development of NDE tools to determine the quality, durability and ageing of adhesive bonds using dielectric technology. Other fields of interest include design with composite materials, aiming to use appropriate laminate theory for applications in a variety of areas including, for example, wind turbine technology and aircraft structures.

In 2008 he became the 123rd President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Bill is a past Chairman of the Engineering Professors’ Council and a former Research Director of the Faraday Plastics Partnership.

Awards he has received for his work include the Institution of Mechanical Engineers 150th Anniversary Silver Medal 1997and the James Alfred Ewing Medal 2007.

In 2000, Bill founded Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part L: Journal of Materials: Design and Applications.
